Our sustainability initiatives

Walking the walk

Impact people, not the planet

Climate change and environmental destruction are real, impacting all of us. There is no plan b here. We could not move to another planet if this did not work out.

We have conveniently ignored environmental problems for far too long because there are always more pressing issues. But we are now on the verge of irreversible climate disruption. There is no more “maybe later”; the time for change is now.

At 5 to 5, every decision is made carefully with the impact on the environment in mind, from sourcing raw materials to our choice of packaging.

We may not have the perfect solution for this extremely complicated issue, but we are trying to do our part, and we believe you too can make a difference by doing your part.

On this page, you can find out about the sustainability initiatives that we have taken so far, and we will update it regularly as we evolve in our sustainability journey.

1% for the Planet Logo

1% of our annual sales goes to back to the environment.

As a member of 1% for the Planet, we are committed to contributing 1% of our annual sales to environmental non-profit organizations to combat climate change and preserve the environment.

1% for the Planet is a global movement founded by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, in 2002. It exists to ensure our planet and future generations thrive.

Today, its community includes 3,975 business members from 70 countries and over 4,000 non-profit partners in more than 90 countries that work on a diverse range of environmental problems.

The right type of plastics

More consumers today demand an alternative to plastic packaging due to mistargeted campaigns that portray all types of plastics as bad for the environment.

However, the reality is more complex than that. Not all plastics are created equal, and plastics are still one of the most efficient materials for skincare packaging regarding their environmental footprint.

Instead, we believe improving the recyclability of our packaging is the way to truly lower our environmental footprint (on top of reducing consumption and reusing what you can).

Most of our plastic packaging is made of monolayer plastics that are widely recycled, such as PET, HDPE, and PP, instead of the commonly used multilayer tubes that are hard to recycle.

But, there is always room for improvement. Pumps (like the one used in our Gentler Cleanser) are often not recycled because they are made of multiple materials that are hard to separate. Rest assured that we are working hard to find a better solution.

Responsibly sourced ingredients.

Borrowing the fantastic benefit of natural ingredients is part of our product philosophy. However, we are committed to never use any rare or endangered botanicals in our products, no matter how unique that ingredient is.

None of the ingredients that we use are rare or exotic, yet they are all carefully selected for their specific benefits to produce a targeted product for your unique needs.
